Important Beginning of the Year Information
1st Grade Expectations
Upon entering first grade, your child should be able to:
- Know first and last name
- Recite address and phone number
- Tie shoes
- Independently dress themselves for the weather (zip, snap, tie, etc)
English Language Arts
Our English Language Arts (ELA) program consists of the following:- Reader’s Workshop Units of Study
- Writer’s Workshop Units of Study
- Phonics Instruction UFLI curriculum
- Read Alouds/We will share literature from all genres for both learning and enjoyment
- Dolch Sight Word lists (Pre-Primer, Primer, and First Grade word lists)
- Fluency
- Differentiated small group instruction
In order to achieve a balanced literacy program, your child will be receiving instruction in the following five components of an effective reading program:
- Phonemic awareness
- Phonics
- Vocabulary development
- Fluency
- Comprehension strategies
Your child will bring home a bag of books at their independent reading level each night. These books should be read and reread whenever possible.
Math
With the implementation of the Common Core State Standards, the content that we will cover this year is as follows:- Counting to 120
- Place value to 100
- Comparing two digit numbers
- Meaning of the equal sign (=)
- Counting on for addition
- Addition and subtraction within 20 (fluency within 10)
- Addition and subtraction properties
- Addition to 20 using 3 whole numbers
- Relationship between addition and subtraction
- Addition and subtraction with an unknown number
- Problem solving
- Coins-names and values
- Shapes-defining attributes
- Two- and three-dimensional shapes
- Addition within 100
- Place value-10 more/10 less and multiples of 10
- Measurement-length and non-standard
- Time-to the hour and half-hour
- Parts of a whole-simple fractions (1/4 and 1/2)
- Data collections
Your child will bring home games to practice the skills learned. Please keep the game and materials to play in a safe place.
Science
Our science curriculum will be a hands-on approach to study the following concepts:- Properties of light & sound
- Living Things
- The Sky Above
- Engineering & Design
These units are all integrated with our language arts program.
Social Studies
The first-grade social studies program will be based on the following four units:- Rules and Laws

Health
Orchard Park Schools implements the Michigan Model for our Health Program. Students also have a weekly Wellness class.Topics covered in First Grade will be:

- Alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs
- Personal health and wellness
